Based on a prompt requesting Bolin’s thoughts on the Avatar as a historical concept, and how they change after he meets Korra.

Bolin first learns about the Avatar when he asks why he can’t bend earth and fire. His parents have to explain that only the Avatar can bend more than one element, and that everyone else just gets one. He thinks that’s unfair. After all, why should only one person get such a cool power? Isn’t there enough bending for everyone to get an extra element?

That day, he is told that the Avatar has a role as the maintainer of balance in this world and the spiritual one, though he only really cares about the master of all four elements part.
